Writing Challenge

Students have been challenged to improve their writing in these last couple of months by writing every night at home. They may write about any topic of their choice. 

Web cast

On Wednesday we participated in a webcast with Dav Pilky and Jeff Kinney, the authors of Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They talked about how they started writing and what all you need to write a good story. Then we started a story together. We came up with a couple of characters, the setting and the conflict. We started writing the story together and then they stopped and asked us to go back to our classes and finish the story for them! Some of the students have chosen to finish the story on their own while others have paired up to work with a partner. We are very excited to see all the different endings to this story! Once they are complete we will mail them to the authors and they will decide on the best ending. 

Eduphoto A Day Challenge

We started a challenge today! It's is called #eduphotadaymay and for each day in May we are challenged to take a picture that represents the word of the day. We then post the picture on Instagram and we check out what other classes around Manitoba are posting. We are using these pictures to generate some ideas for our writing. It is also to challenge to come up with ideas for a picture for the word of the day! Persuasive writing

Tomorrow we are going to edit another persons rough copy of their persuasive writing. Everyone was free to choose their own topic.
Please make sure you have a written hard copy of your writing that can be exchanged with someone else, ready for tomorrow.

My best vacation .... (This is to be three paragraphs about the best vacation they have been on or the best vacation that they could imagine.)

Writing Assignment due Friday April 13
Students are creating their own comic strip. It is to have 4 boxes. We have been discussing characters and setting quite a bit so these should be very evident in their comic as well as having a beginning, middle and end.

Green Space

MES GREEN SPACE

Our school is planning on developing and constructing a sustainable green space. A green space is an environmentally friendly place. These are some ideas we are thinking of doing:

·        Trees

·        Rain Water Collection System

·        Natural Grasses

·        Composters

·        Bird feeders

·        Bird houses

·        Bat houses

·        Benches

·        Two yards of dirt

We are planting trees that are native to our region along with some native grasses that do not need to be cut.  We have chosen two types of trees.  We voted as a class and the Aspen and Jack Pine/Red Pine were selected.  We would like to have a composter for all the materials we are able to compost. A composter is something that breaks down food such as apple peels and banana peels and it turns into a material that is rich in nutrients.  We would like to have a few bird feeders, bird houses, and bat houses.  We want to include some benches for everyone to sit on in our green space as well. We really need some dirt for the trees we are planning to plant.  We are looking for some partners in this project to help us either financially or with the materials.
